Digital agencies and open-source community encouraged to share best practices for reducing carbon footprint
Open-source .Net content management system (CMS) provider, Umbraco, has announced a competition to encourage digital agencies and open-source community members to submit ideas that further reduce the carbon footprint of websites and digital services built on the Umbraco platform.
More than a million Umbraco websites have been built over the past twenty years. It is among the top three CMS platforms used within the UK public sector and the primary CMS cited in the MemberWise Digital Excellence survey, by medium to large organisations in the UK Membership and Association sector.
As the largest open-source .Net CMS provider, Umbraco has an opportunity to share sustainable practices and influence changes among its open-source community, digital agency partners and their clients, that will measurably reduce the environmental impact of websites and digital services built on the Umbraco platform.
In August the company announced the formation of the Umbraco Sustainability Team, comprising Umbraco MVPs, digital agencies, business leaders and Umbraco employees, who have published best practices for building sustainable websites and digital services.
Energy-saving tips included within the best practices guidelines include:
- Compressing images and fonts to keep web page weight below 1MB
- Using a content delivery network
- Applying lazy loading
- Considering dark mode as default for mobile devices
- Turning off auto-play
“Applying these sorts of changes can measurably reduce the CO2 emissions for every home page visit. That makes a really big difference to the carbon footprint of a site that sees millions of visitors,” says Umbraco CMS Product Owner, Lasse Fredslund.
Explaining the Sustainability Challenge, Lasse Fredslund, who also leads the Umbraco Sustainability Team comments, “Digital agency partners and anyone with an Umbraco URL can submit their ideas on fresh ways to make websites more sustainable. This could involve writing code, changing processes, or educating colleagues, clients and end-users on sustainable web design practices. The winners will be those who can show measurable impact from their actions or changes.”
People entering the Sustainability Challenge need to note the following dates:
24th October 2023– deadline for submitting ideas to Umbraco Sustainability Team via https://feedback.umbraco.com/sustainability-challenge-sign-up
19th February 2024– deadline for sharing measurable results
23rd March 2024 – winners announced.
Lasse Fredslund comments, “Umbraco has always worked hand-in-hand with its open-source community to make necessary changes and address challenges. We look forward to seeing what initiatives the community suggests, so that we can spread the word on sustainable web design and make a much bigger difference collectively.”
